Census returns for schools in 2006

Census returns are a statutory requirement on schools under section 537A of the Education Act 1996.

PLASC (Pupil Level Annual School Census)

A PLASC return should be made by Nurseries, Primaries, Middle Schools (Deemed Primary), and Special Schools (including Non-Maintained Special Schools).

PLASC data includes gender, date of birth, UPN, surname, first name, ethnic group, date of admission to school, first language and home postcode.

PLASC data underpins the National Pupil Database and is used in publications such as the Autumn Package and PANDAs.

The PLASC return date is Thursday 19 January 2006.

ASC (Annual School Census)

The ASC replaces PLASC in 2006 for all maintained secondary schools, CTCs and Academies in England and on a voluntary basis Service Children's Education (Secondary Schools). The term 'secondary school' includes Middle (Deemed Secondary) Schools.

Every maintained secondary school, CTC and Academy in England is expected to complete three Census Returns in the calendar year 2006. There will be one collection each term, or for authorities that operate six term years, collection will be every other term.

The ASC return dates are as follows:

third Thursday in January (19th January 2006 )
third Thursday in May (18th May 2006)
third Thursday in September (21st September 2006)
